this shot has such a strong but soft gay energy
i’m not sure how to best articulate this but, it looks like a still from a dreamlike gay coming of age period piece produced in the 1990s
the film is set in rural England in the 19th century and it’s about an upper-class young man who falls in love with a groundskeeper. it has a dreamlike tone and several surreal sequences dramatising the characters’ emotions and internal struggles. the soundtrack includes a number of anachronistic 90s pop ballads.
at the end of the film one of them dies somehow but then, in a surreal & ambiguous ending, returns from the dead and both of them go off hand in hand into the woods to live happily ever after.
critically successful but provoked a love-hate reaction from the LGBT community.
