‘Market at Covent Garden’ by Pieter Angillis, circa. 1726

Things to spot:

  • Watermelons for sale
  • A man balancing a tower of baskets on his head for the amusement of onlookers.
  • A foppish, well-dressed gentleman conversing with two nicely dressed ladies.
  • Market good being lifted off a cart in baskets.
  • A man on horseback playing a flute.
  • Three gentlemen drinking an alcoholic beverage, served by one of them from a large jug. All three men are shabbily dressed but one of them wears a blue velvet coat, probably bought second-hand.
  • A lady making and selling pancakes. Two children dip their fingers in the mixture, whilst the pancake seller’s husband sleeps soundly at her feet.
