Hands down, still one of the best descriptive paragraphs I’ve ever read:

“I’m confronted by a customer with an extremely high pitched voice
and impenetrable Highland accent. This is one of those tiny old Scottish

a common sight in the East of Scotland, and are almost immortal. Only
the slow action of the wind off the north sea will gradually erode them.”

the only piece of writing that I liked by Burns when I was a teen was Tam O’ Shanter and I think that’s entirely because it involved a guy on the drink getting scared of what he thinks he sees in the dark on the walk home

if you’ve ever lived in rural Scotland that’s incredibly relatable

All the Hebrideans are probably asleep but consider:

Established girl names: Skye, Isla(y), Jura, Barra, Tiree, Rona

Established boy names: Lewis, Harris, Coll, Arran

Unexplored gender neutral territory for the hipster gays to name their hipster kids: Mull, Uist, Vatersay, Raasay, Gigha, Luing, Bute, Lismore, Colonsay, Hirta, Eigg, Rhum, Muck, Scalpay, ok Eriskay is actually a good one

“So is it Benjamin? Benedict?”

“…….Benbecula.”
